Considerations when buying a used pair of skiis?

Looking to buy a used pair of skis I am new to skiing and am not looking to spend a ton of money. I am curious as to what I should be looking for. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

First thing is whether or not these are the right ski for you. A lot of times at ski shows/swaps you will find a lot of racing skis. These are a great find if indeed you want such a thing. If you want an all-mountain ski, this is not necessarily such a good thing.

Make sure the bases and edges are in good condition. Expect some abuse on twin-tip skis due to the nature of terrain park skiing, but avoid buying any skis with obvious dents, digs, and edges that look really beat. Check also to make sure the bindings are in decent shape, no rust or bends in the ski brakes. It would be a good idea to have any ski with a mounted binding checked by a ski shop before you use it.

Buy the correct ski for your weight. If you are buying from eBay or Craigslist, take some time to look up the manufacturer’s weight-to-length ratio on their websites. Some sellers will include this info when they post the item for auction. Many don’t, so you should know what size you need before bidding or buying.

Avoid buying something more than 4-5 years old. Skis that are 10 years old and have only been used once may be in great shape, but are so far behind the technology of today’s skis that using something that old will not give you the turning ability you will find with something newer.

If something is last season’s model and is in really good condition (such as a demo ski) and has bindings, I would pay up to $250 for skis and bindings. Then deduct $50 for each year back. (ie. Something from the 2007-08 season would be $200.) If the skis look like they need a good tune-up and some work, haggle with the seller and try to come down $40-$50 because that’s what you are gonna have to spend at the ski shop on a wax, tune-up, and the time /gas driving to the shop.

I’d also really look around and see if you can score something “new” from last season. I got brand-new skis and bindings mid-season last year for under $380. If I were to buy those same skis today I wouldn’t go over $300 since they are last years stuff. So if you can fork over an additional couple of bucks you might be able to get something new (with warranty) from a shop as opposed to something used (with no warranty) from Joe-Shmoe on eBay or a ski swap.
