French Stamps: Historical Background
The first stamp was introduced in the UK in 1840 by Rowland Hill and James Chalmers. This stamp, the penny black, had a face value of a penny and revolutionized the postal system, as it now is for the sender to bear the cost of sending and recipient as was the case until then. Because now it was so cheap to send letters, but in 1840 a coin was not a lot of money, the change resulted in an almost immediate increase in the amount of mail. Other countries took notice and reformed their own mail system, including Brazil in 1843, the United States in 1847 and France in 1849.
While that the same change was proposed as early as 1837 in France, it took nine years for the postal administration to change, following the 1848 revolution and the drive Arago. The French label is displayed first Ceres, the Roman god of agriculture and had a face value of 20 cents or pennies. The drawing of Ceres is Jean Jacques Barre. The hallmark of Ceres was enough to pay for an allocation of up to 7.5 grams to be sent anywhere in France. Shortly after he was released from 40 cents orange label for larger envelopes and vermilion red 1 Franc stamp. However, the color of the seal 1 Franco was too similar to the mark of 40 cents and People are confused. This led to a change in color to the stamp of the 1F of crimson red to deep vermilion. Today, the bright red stamp is 40 cents the rarest of French stamps.
French Stamps Today
Philately is the number one pastime in France with more than two million people practice it. Exotic islands, botany, birds, stamp sheets, samples or airmail stamps are popular items among collectors of stamps France. As in other countries, the value of the stamps of France is often determined by some type of unusual feature some seals are known to occur. This is true for old and new stamps equal. For example, the 1989 commemorative stamp designed by Folon Revolution worth less than one euro, but lack the signature of Folon the value jumps to 180 euros mark. Similarly, if the face value of the stamp issued in 2004 to commemorate the Entente Cordiale between France and England is missing, the stamp may be worth 300 euros and up.
At what age is a stamp also plays an important role in this assessment. There are three major periods in the history of the French brand: the classical period from 1840 to 1900, the semi-modern period from 1900 to 1939 and the modern era from 1939 onwards. Stamps of the classical period are greatly appreciated, especially the 1 franc vermillion 1849-1850 with Ceres, which costs EUR 90 000 EUR 20 000 new and used. A block of four of these stamps sold for EUR 820 000 the auction because one of the seals was "tête-cucumber", printed upside down.
